Get involved with the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation

imageGet involved as a volunteer with the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation's community of cyclists and activists today and help promote bicycling as a form of transportation and recreation in the seven-county Chicago region. Volunteers are the natural fuel behind the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation's effectiveness. We are grateful for the energy our volunteers contribute and are always interested in attracting new ones.

Volunteer benefits
Volunteers receive many benefits, including an invitation to the annual Volunteer Appreciation Party, as well as opportunities to:
  • meet and work with other cyclists and activists from the region
  • be active in bringing about positive changes to the bicycling community
  • learn more about how bicycle planning, development and advocacy really work
Tracking the value of a volunteer hour
While it is a challenge to place a dollar value on the important work volunteers do for the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, the tracking of hours helps put into perspective the enormous contributions they provide. Independent Sector announced March 8, 2006, that the estimated value of a volunteer hour in 2005 is $18.04. This number, up from 2004's estimate of $17.55, gives CBF a tool to help quantify the immense contributions volunteers make. The hourly value of volunteer time is based on the average hourly wage of all non-management, non-agricultural workers as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with a 12 percent increase to estimate for fringe benefits.

Volunteer oath
The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation requires an honest commitment from its volunteers. Tackling a large effort such as bicycle advocacy in one of the country's most congested regions can be overwhelming. Therefore, we recommend that volunteers adopt the following oath:
"I promise not to bite off more than I can chew and to finish all that I bite off."
When volunteers make an honest time commitment and follow this oath, the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation is better able to accomplish its mission.

The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation is looking for more than a few good people to add to its ranks. Check out our list of current volunteer opportunities, and if you fit any of the descriptions, let us know.
